POPE ST PIUS V FEASTDAY 30TH APRIL

REFLECTION – Thy cross, O Lord, is the source of all blessings, the cause of all graces; by it the faithful find strength in weakness, glory in humiliation, life in death. …….St Pope Pius V

All the evils of the world are due to lukewarm Catholics.”  …….St Pope Pius V

“Holy Communion is the shortest and the safest way to Heaven.”  …….St Pope Pius V

SHORT NOTE ON HIS LIFE AS POPE

St Pius V is the Pope who ordered the founding of seminaries. He published a new missal, a new breviary, a new catechism and established the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) classes for the young. He patiently served the sick and the poor by building hospitals, providing food for the hungry and giving money to poor Roman converts. His decision to keep wearing his Dominican habit led to the custom of the pope wearing a white cassock. In striving to reform both Church and state, Pius encountered vehement opposition from Queen Elizabeth and the Roman Emperor Maximilian II. Problems in France and in the Netherlands hindered Pius’s hopes for a Europe united against the Turks. Only at the last minute was he able to organize a fleet which won a decisive victory in the Gulf of Lepanto, on October 7, 1571. What Pope Francis does now, St Pius did before him – his ceaseless papal quest for a renewal of the Church was grounded in his personal life. He spent long hours with his God in prayer, fasted rigorously, deprived himself of many customary papal luxuries and faithfully observed the spirit of the Dominican Rule that he had professed.

FOR THE GLORY OF GOD

“Anything we do, without
offering it to God, is wasted.”

CHOOSE YOUR WAY..IT'S UP TO YOU

“I saw two roads. One was broad, covered with sand and flowers, full of joy, music and all sorts of pleasures. People walked along it, dancing and enjoying themselves. They reached the end without realizing it. And at the end of the road there was a horrible precipice; that is, the abyss of hell. The souls fell blindly into it; as they walked, so they fell. And their number was so great that it was impossible to count them. And I saw the other road, or rather, a path, for it was narrow and strewn with thorns and rocks; and the people who walked along it had tears in their eyes, and all kinds of suffering befell them. Some fell down upon the rocks, but stood up immediately and went on. At the end of the road there was a magnificent garden filled with all sorts of happiness and all these souls entered there. At the very first instant they forgot all their sufferings” (Diary 153).

ST MARK THE EVANGELIST

St Mark fulfilled in his life what every Christian is called to do:
proclaim to all people the Good News that is the source of salvation.
In particular, Mark’s way was by writing.
Others may proclaim the Good News by music, drama, poetry or by teaching children around a family table.
We are all called in the same way as St Mark was – we are all new disciples of the Lord!
St Mark Pray for us!

WHY PRAY?

“God is so good and so merciful
that to obtain heaven it is sufficient
to ask it of Him from our hearts.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY POPE EMERITUS

THE REAL VICTORY

REFLECTION – Many are those who gain a victory over cities and castles yet fail to overcome themselves and their enemies – the world, the flesh and the devil.
Hence, we can say that they do not possess any real benefits…..St Catherine of Siena

THINK ABOUT YOUR SALVATION

Brothers, I most strongly urge you to work for the salvation of your souls with prudence and diligence. Death is certain, and life is short and vanishes like smoke. Therefore you must fix your minds on the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ who so burned with love for us that he came down from heaven to redeem us………..
St Francis of Paola
