CHRISTMAS IS NEAR
Jesus was born in a cave in Bethlehem because, Sacred Scripture tells us, “there was no room for them in the inn.”
—I am not departing from theological truth when I say that Jesus is still looking for shelter in your heart.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY POPE FRANCIS
O God, the Shepherd and Ruler of all the faithful, look down, in Your mercy, upon Your servant, Pope Francis, whom You have appointed to preside over Your Church and grant, we beseech You, that today on his 80th Birthday, You will bless him and protect him.
May he, both by word and example, edify all those under his charge; so that, with the flock entrusted to him, he may arrive at length unto life everlasting. Through Christ our Lord. R. Amen.
Congratulations Pope Francis!

THE CROSS
John, in his life and writings, has a crucial word for us today. We tend to be rich, soft, comfortable. We shrink even from words like self-denial, mortification, purification, asceticism, discipline. We run from the cross. John’s message—like the gospel—is loud and clear: Don’t—if you really want to live!
“O you souls who wish to go on with so much safety and consolation, if you knew how pleasing to God is suffering and how much it helps in acquiring other good things, you would never seek consolation in anything; but you would rather look upon it as a great happiness to bear the Cross of the Lord.” – Saint John of the Cross

TRUST IN THE MOTHER OF GOD
“Am I not here, I, who am your mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Are you not in the hollow of my mantle, the crossing of my arms? Am I not the source of all your joy? What more do you need? Let nothing else worry you, disturb you.”
– The Virgin Mary, to St. Juan Diego at Tepeyac Hill

ST AMBROSE
“There is a legend that as an infant, a swarm of bees settled on his face while he lay in his cradle, leaving behind a drop of honey. His father considered this a sign of his future eloquence and honeyed tongue. For this reason, bees and beehives often appear in the saint’s symbology.”

IS CHRIST YOUR KING?
Is Christ really your king?
A King has authority, so another way of posing this question is, “Does Christ have authority in your life?” Consider whether you acknowledge that everything you call your own really belongs to God and think about how well you use those gifts.
- How do you use our time?
- Are you committed to pray and to attend Mass every Sunday without fail?
- Do you use enough of your time to serve God and others, or merely for selfish pursuits?
- Do you use the gift of your speech to witness and evangelize, or merely for small talk and gossip?
- Do you exhibit proper care for your body?
- Are you chaste?
- Do you observe proper safety or are you sometimes reckless?
- Do you reverence life?
- Are you faithful to the Lord’s command to tithe?
- Do you spend wisely?
- Do you pay your debts in a timely way?
- Are you generous enough to the poor and needy?
- Do you love the poor and help them to sustain their lives?
It is one thing to call Christ our King, but it is another to be truly under His authority. The Lord is clear enough in telling us that he expects our obedience: Why do you call me, “Lord, Lord,” but do not do what I tell you? (Luke 6:46)
Is Christ your King?
